Ideas on exercise, health and wellness have changed dramatically over the past few decades. More people than ever before are open to holistic and alternative practices, and turn to holistic medicine, healthy eating, and Reiki instead of -- or in conjunction with -- traditional medicine. Livingston is on the cutting edge of enlightenment, boasting a number of yoga studios, Reiki practitioners, and forward-thinking exercise programs and health enthusiasts. On Livingston Avenue alone, residents can simply stroll down the street and into all types of wellness programs. Below is a round-up of some such studios and practitioners in Livingston. The 60-minute class is designed to "strengthen, lengthen and develop leaner muscles in the healthiest way possible," said owner Nora Yi. Barre3 was started in Portland, OR by famous fitness guru Sadie Lincoln. According to their website, it’s a “unique 3-step sequence creates the strength of an athlete with the long, lean, graceful lines of a dancer.” The class involves yoga, Pilates and the essence of ballet barre, according to Yi. Debby Kaminsky is a yoga instructor and a mother of two, but she likes to be known as something else. “I call myself the ‘Peace Igniter,” she said. Kaminsky teaches yoga at workshops around Essex County, including studios in Livingston and Glen Ridge, but she is also proud of teaching yoga at Newark’s public schools and of her participation in the upcoming Newark Peace Education Summit from May 13-15. “I’m incredibly excited,” says Kaminsky. “They asked me to be on the advisory committee and oversee the yoga component.” She said the peace summit will have such honored guests as The Dalai Lama, Nobel Laureates and local celebrities, including Mayor Cory A. Busy, hectic mom turns to yoga for peace.
I couldn’t wait to escape my house. The never ending snow and school closings, a case of strep (my youngest daughter), a cold (my older daughter), and an injured husband (from soccer), I desperately craved some me time. I had heard that Exhale Yoga had recently moved to South Livingston Avenue and was now called Ignite Yoga. Daniele Jarman, the co-owner of Ignite Yoga is partnering with Agnes Tengerdy. The new studio now offers various classes such as Hot Yoga, Chakra Therapy, and Yin Yoga. I decided to head over on a recent Friday morning to check it out. Jarman was teaching the Vinyasa Flow Open Flow class. As I set up my mat on the floor, I looked around the serene studio. The words Dream and Believe were displayed in front. I sat down …
