Stephen Oremus, who previously won for 'Book of Mormon,' is nominated again.

Livingston High School alumni Stephen Oremus (LHS Class of '89) was nominated Tuesday for a Tony Award for "Best Orchestration" for Kinky Boots, the new Broadway show with music by Cyndi Lauper and book by Harvey Fierstein. The musical received 13 nominations, the most of any show this year. Oremus previously won for The Book of Mormon, for which he received the 2011 Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Orchestrations. He also received a 2012 Grammy award as a producer of The Book of Mormon original Broadway cast recording. Backstage: Flight of the Bumblebees

Local actors fly high at the Tony celebration.

We're still buzzing with excitement from Sunday night's Tony Awards. Hometown stars Nikki M. James and Stephen Oremus made Livingston proud. At the awards ceremony, James likened herself to the bumblebee, which flies through “sheer will and determination … I come from a long line of bumblebees." In this special View Finder, Laurence Agron, a professional photojournalist from Livingston, provides photos from the backstage celebration and Maplewood's Norbert Leo Butz literally jumping for joy. Butz won best leading actor in a musical for his role as Carl Hanratty – “the greatest role I've ever been offered in my life” – in Catch Me If You Can. James and Oremus won Tony Awards for their work in The Book of Mormon, the evening's runaway winner…

Hometown Stars Win Tony Awards

Nikki M. James and Stephen Oremus win for 'The Book of Mormon.'

It was a great night for Nikki M. James and Stephen Oremus, Livingston natives who won Tony Awards on Sunday for their work in The Book of Mormon. James, who starred in Hello Dolly at LHS in 1999, and Oremus, who accompanied the theater stars on LHS stages 10 years earlier, helped The Book of Mormon, the musical comedy from the makers of “South Park,” win nine Tony Awards by a musical at the ceremony at the Beacon Theatre in New York. Early in the evening, Stephen Oremus (LHS Class of '89) and Larry Hochman won for best orchestrations for The Book of Mormon. But in perhaps the evening’s biggest surprise, James, nominated alongside her childhood hero Patti LuPone, won for best performance by an actress in a featured role in a musical. In …

Tony Nominees Reaching New Heights

Nikki M. James lights up the Empire State Building as she enjoys the excitement leading to the Broadway awards.

Livingston has reason to watch the 65th Tony Awards on Sunday night: Two LHS alumni are up for awards for their work in The Book of Mormon. Mormon is expected to dominate the awards ceremony at the Beacon Theater in New York. And Nikki M. James, an actress who grew up on Livingston stages, is enjoying every minute. Earlier this week, the pre-Tony buzz had her scaling new heights to the top of the Empire State Building for a photo shoot with some of the other nominated stars of this season’s Broadway hits. “I keep getting introduced as a Tony nominee, which is amazing. I can’t get enough of hearing that,” James told Speakeasy, the Wall Street Journal blog. Stephen Oremus, the show's musical director, was nominated with Larry Hochman for …

As nominations for the Tony Awards were announced, two Livingston graduates were among 14 nominated for their work on The Book of Mormon: Actress Nikki M. James and Stephen Oremus, the show's musical director. The Book of Mormon has been an unlikely hit about two Mormon missionaries who find more than they bargained for in Africa. The musical was written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of the popular animated series “South Park,” and Robert Lopez, co-creator of the Tony Award-winning musical “Avenue Q.” The play nabbed a leading 14 Tony Award nominations Tuesday morning, for best musical, best book of a musical, best original score, two leading actor spots and two featured actor nominations, among others.
