Stripes of Tiger Mom – and Parenting – Aren’t Black and White

But there are many shades of gray in finding the right balance in life.

Are you pro or con about Amy Chua's "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother?" Did Chua’s parenting and how she raised her daughters incense you? Is it because her ways were so foreign to your way? You aren’t alone. She is receiving much negative publicity: even as I write this column her husband is everywhere, defending his wife. The intent of her book, though, was to share her experiences based on her own personal and cultural background and her personal beliefs. Again, they were her choices and I am not here to judge her strategies. We are products of our environment, and our cultural differences aren’t something we can say is right or wrong. I'm not certain I'm unhappy that some parents would promote this style of parenting. We definitely need a lot of very well educated, meticulous hard working people to ensure the world runs smoothly.
