Temple Emanu-El to Install New Rabbi

Rabbi Greg E. Litcofsky will be installed as part of a weekend long celebration on Nov. 16.

Temple Emanu-El will be installing a new rabbi on Friday, November 16 at 6:30 p.m. Rabbi Greg E. Litcofsky will be installed as part of a weekend long celebration that will also kick-off the temple’s Listening Campaign, Building our Congregational Vision Together.  This special service, followed by a celebratory community oneg, will be lead by Rabbi Litcofsky and Cantor Sharon Brown-Levy. It will feature the adult choir Shir Libeinu and youth choir Shalom Singers. Rabbi Emeritus Peter Kasdan will also share in the celebration of Rabbi Litcofsky’s installation service. Livingston Senior Awarded Mesnick Scholarship

LHS senior Scott Levine awarded the scholarship by Temple Emanu-El.

Temple Emanu-El announced that senior Scott Levine was awarded the Marvin Mesnick Scholarship for 2012 at their high school graduation dinner on June 1.  The Mesnick Scholarship, a tuition award, is given to a graduating high school senior who demonstrates a commitment to Temple Emanu-El, to their senior youth group TEMTY, to Reform Judaism, and to acts of tikkun olam (repairing the world).  Marvin Mesnick was a special man who cherished these values and a profound commitment to youth.  This is the twenty-second year that the scholarship has been awarded. LHS Senior to Hold Seminar on Human Trafficking

Sarah Stein, a LHS senior and incoming freshman at Emerson College, will be conducting an informational seminar on June 26, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Temple Emanu-El.

Sarah Stein, a Livingston High School senior and incoming freshman at Emerson College, will be conducting an informational seminar on June 26, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Temple Emanu-El.  The subject of her seminar will be the horrors of Human Trafficking, internationally and domestically. Today, there are an estimated 10-30 million people who are victims of modern day slavery.  Every 3 out of 4 slaves is a woman, and half of these slaves are children.  Did you know there are an estimated 17,500 people trafficked into the United States? In addition to holding the seminar, Stein will also be looking to secure a Girl Scout Gold Award with this community service awareness project.  A Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn…

First Ordained U.S. Female Rabbi to Speak Locally

Temple Emanu-El of West Essex to host Rabbi Sally Priesand on April 15.

Rabbi Sally Priesand, the first female rabbi ordained in the United States, will be the guest speaker at Temple Emanu-El of West Essex on Sunday, April 15 from 9:30-11 a.m. The event, which begins with a bagel breakfast, will feature Priesand giving a speech about “Reflections on My Life as a Rabbi.” In addition to authoring “Judaism and the New Woman,” Priesand is a contributor to “Woman Rabbis: Exploration and Celebration” as well as “A Treasury of Favorite Sermons by Leading American Rabbis.” She is a strong believer in many causes including justice and peace, equal opportunity for women, the needs of the hungry and the homeless and the survival of Israel. 'The Wizard of Oyz' at Temple Emanu-El

Part of annual Purim Spiel celebration, runs March 7 and March 11.

Special performances of “The Wizard of Oyz," part of Temple Emanu-El's annual 2012 Purim Spiel celebration will take place this week as part of the Purim holiday celebration. The event involves temple members of all ages, from the religious school, the Early Childhood Center, teenagers, adults, clergy and staff.   Come see the fun in this wild musical featuring a great band, costumes and more. There will be two showings: Wednesday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m., (Erev Purim) and Sunday, March 11 at 9:45 a.m. The Sunday performance will be followed by the annual Purim Carnival. Mitzvah Day Sees Many Good Deeds

Members of Temple Emanu-El donate blood, write letters to soldiers, knit blankets and much more.

Temple Emanu-El held a Mitzvah Day on Sunday, January 8.  Social Action volunteers organized and arranged a blood drive, which was an outstanding success with 42 donors and 36 units of blood donated.  In addition, religious school children wrote letters to service people serving in Afghanistan which were handed over to Hobbie's Delicatessen of Newark, to be sent with their next Operation Salami shipment. Thank you notes were created for the delight of the blood donors and staff.  Get well cards were created for temple members. Over 200 flower pens were made for distribution to assisted living residents and clients of the soup kitchen. One hundred and ten encouraging door hangers were made for nursing home residents.  Beautiful placemats …
