Collaborative effort connects schools, township and businesses through Stuff the Bus
All nine Livingston Public Schools, along with Kushner Hebrew Academy, Aquinas Academy and many local Livingston businesses, participated in Friday’s Stuff the Bus for CHOW and Ventnor, NJ. It was unlike any community service event that ever previously occurred. While students and schools in Livingston are always doing wonderful things for their community, never has the town had all nine schools participating in one sole project, let alone connect with private schools, local businesses and the township. Livingston Public Schools wanted to make a real impact and by unifying many smaller collection efforts in the town and schools, Stuff the Bus was able to serve as a direct way to help a community in need in a big way. This collaborative …

Christopher Bickel, who grew up in Ventnor helped arrange the latest Stuff the Bus.
Chris Bickel has never forgotten the help he received from his hometown. The Ventnor, NJ native, who has since relocated to Livingston, helped spearhead the latest Stuff the Bus, which collected healthy, unexpired, non-perishables, personal hygiene items and cleaning supplies for the residents in Ventnor, who were crippled by last month’s storm. “I’m proud of the Livingston community for what we were able to do,” Bickel said. “The businesses, the clergy, the schools, the town, everybody came out of the woodwork to help. It was just amazing. And the last time I remember a community outpouring of support like that was when I was a resident here (in Ventnor).” The second youngest in a family of ten, Bickel, then 16, found himself and his …

Volunteers packed two buses with food and supplies for the citizens of Ventnor.
Hundreds of people lined up in front of the Ventnor Educational Community Complex on Saturday to welcome the buses from Livingston’s latest Stuff the Bus. This edition of Stuff the Bus was geared towards helping the citizens of Ventnor, a shore community with a population of 10,650. The city suffered extensive damage during the Hurricane Sandy last month, leaving thousands without power. The Livingston community was able to collect over two buses full of food and supplies to bring down to Ventnor. Joining the supplies were 14 volunteers, from the township and school district, eager to help unload the bus and hand supplies out. “It was really great to help out and see people who needed things get what they needed,” said Spencer Silverman…

Livingston’s Stuff the Bus is once again collecting for C.H.O.W, but this time it is also headed to the Jersey Shore.
Millions of New Jerseyans were affected by Hurricane Sandy, which hit the state just a little over two weeks ago. While most of the state has recovered from the storm, there is still a section that is reeling from the devastation. The Township of Livingston and Livingston Public Schools are joining forces to “adopt” the towns of Ventnor and Atlantic City, N.J. As a way to contribute to those still feeling the effects of the storm, Livingston's successful Stuff the Bus will once again collect food for the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse (C.H.O.W.), but this time it is also headed to the Jersey Shore. "As life returns back to normal for many, some are just beginning to pick up the pieces in what will be a very long recovery after…

The children of The Phillip J. Solondz Preschool at Temple Beth Shalom holds a healthier Stuff the Bus on Food Day.
In honor of Livingston’s Food Day, on October 24, The Phillip J. Solondz Preschool at Temple Beth Shalom held a fresh produce mini “Stuff the Bus” food drive for Livingston’s C.H.O.W. (Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse). This event was held prior to Hurricane Sandy and the storm delayed publicity. Now power is back for most in our area, we want to showcase the amazing work these kids did. This event was modeled after the very successful town-wide “Stuff the Bus” with healthy food (non-perishables) that was held for CHOW three times this year. Food Day is a celebration and a movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food, and this was one of 10 Livingston events planned in honor of Food Day. The preschool was very pleased to be…

The latest installment of Stuff the Bus is deemed a success.
Stuff the Bus was an incredible success, and CHOW (Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse) received much needed healthy donations and supplies. Baby food and diapers, multi-grain cereals, oatmeal, low sodium soups, tuna, peanut butter and jelly, and whole wheat pasta were just a few of the donations that easily stuffed the bus full of donations and now line CHOW’s shelves. The bus stopped at Newark Academy, Shoprite, Kings, Mount Pleasant Elementary School, Harrison Elementary School, Temple Beth Shalom, and at the Livingston 2012 Fun Run for Health and Wellness. The schools demonstrated strong support for CHOW. Newark Academy’s Community Service Council helped collect over 700 items and tied the event into their Spirit Week Celebration. …

The second annual Food Day on October 24 will be a big event in Livingston this year.
Livingston is gearing up to fight hunger by celebrating Food Day. Throughout the month of October there are many events planned in Livingston. Residents and non-residents are welcome and encouraged to participate. Food Day, sponsored by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, is a nationwide celebration and a movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. Last year, for the first time, over 2,500 events were held in all 50 states in homes, schools, congregations, farmers markets, restaurants, libraries, supermarkets and businesses. Food Day is held on October 24, but efforts can be held anytime throughout the year. The concept of Food Day was introduced to Livingston by the United Way’s Pantry Partners, which had …

The latest installment of Stuff the Bus will be this Sunday.
Can we fill a large school bus with healthy food donations for C.H.O.W. (Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse)? Organizers are once again counting on it! Following the success of the May and August Stuff the Bus food drives, the community is looking to hold one more on Sunday, October 14 in order to help the food pantry out during this pre-holiday season. All collected food will be donated to Livingston’s C.H.O.W.. C.H.O.W, spearheaded by Sister Barbara Howard of St. Philomena’s and a project of the Livingston Clergy Association, will distribute collected items to Livingston residents in need. Housed at St. Philomena’s, C.H.O.W. is also open to local residents, of all faith, in need on a drop-in basis and those interested can contact …

Livingston’s town-wide community service project, Collecting Healthy Food for C.H.O.W., is up and running and organizers want to make sure you know where you can drop off your food drive donations.
Following the success of last year’s collection for Soles 4 Souls, Livingston has decided to take on a new challenge for this year’s town wide community service project; hunger. Livingston’s town wide community service project, Collecting Healthy Food for C.H.O.W. (Community Hunger Outreach Network), is up and running and organizers want to make sure you know where you can drop off your food drive donations. C.H.O.W. is the organizer of the two successful Stuff the Bus events this year. The next Stuff the Bus will be held on October 14 at the 2012 Livingston Fun Run for Health and Wellness. In addition to that event, the town will be holding a town wide food drive until the end of October. Working in conjunction with Food Day organizers…
