DiVincenzo Delivers State of County Address Before Christie, Dignitaries

Essex County executive highlights accomplishments, announces litany of 2013 projects during annual speech.

Before a crowd of more than 300 people Tuesday night, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. heralded Essex County’s most significant accomplishments in his 10th annual State of the County address at the Essex County Hospital Center in Cedar Grove. The audience, which included Gov. Chris Christie, state Sen. President Stephen Sweeney and state Assembly Speaker Sheila Y. Oliver, listened intently as DiVincenzo checked off a litany of accomplishments, including spending cuts, revenue increases, controlling taxes and providing services. “At a time when all levels of government have raided their surpluses, we have been able to grow our rainy day fund,” said DiVincenzo, praising the county’s ability to prevent layoffs and improve its …

Column: Could You Live on $15,080 a Year?

Assembly debate on minimum wage increase another example of the polarization of the parties, columnist says.

Imagine yourself a minimum-wage worker. You earn $7.25 an hour. You work full-time, eight hours a day, maybe flipping burgers, maybe scanning groceries, maybe taking tickets at a movie theater. You make $290 a week, $15,080 a year. You’re renting an apartment since, clearly, you can’t afford to buy a home. Rent is $1,233 a month. After you pay that rent–hopefully it includes utilities–you’ve got $284 to spend. For the entire year. It’s probably best to take a job in food service, where you might be able to snatch a handful of fries or fistful of popcorn for free, because the $5.40 you have left over each week won’t even buy one day’s worth of healthy meals. Somehow politicians don't seem to understand that the purpose of a minimum wage is not, was never and will never be meant to support yourself or a family. It is generally paid to people working low skill, part time, or youth "first job" type of work. The minimum wage is currently $7.35 per hour and many years ago, I know of a business (no longer there) that was offering $9.25 per hour, and they …   more ›
