Dr. Daniel Lee spoke at the Old Guard meeting this week at the Senior/Community Center. There were 65 members present plus the general public to hear Dr. Lee’s presentation regarding high blood pressure or hypertension [see video]. Dr. Lee explained how this condition is extremely prevalent among senior citizens and must be closely monitored. Part of his presentation entailed demonstrating the proper method for self monitoring at home. The Senior/Community Center was packed on Wednesday with seniors getting the flu shot. If you didn’t get yours, it’s not too late: They’ll be given again on Oct. 5. Seniors also travelled to the Essex County Senior Wellness Day at the Codey Arena. With the Livingtones singing appropriately enough “You Are My Sunshine,” senior citizens spent a rainy day bidding farewell to summer at their ice cream social. Sonny Peters, choral director for the AARP singing group, played the piano as the choir led a sing-a-long of familiar favorites. There was also dancing, and jokes, and of course, dessert. The township sponsored the “end of summer” celebration. Liliana Branquinho, supervisor of senior services and special events, had planned the “ice cream social” to be held at Northland Pool but due to the weather it was held Sept. 7 at the Livingston Senior/Community Center. The rain didn’t dampen the senior’s spirits -- they turned out in record number requiring opening the adjoining room to …

The 2011 Essex County Senior Citizens Juried Art Show provides venue for local talent.
Gray hairs and golden years can sometimes be the perfect recipe to create an artist. Retirees often have the time and fascination to commit to a passion that was lost to their youth. That passion and talent was never more evident than at the 2011 Essex County Senior Citizens Juried Art Show in Cedar Grove, where Essex County Executive, Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr., awarded top prizes to 34 out of the 124 entrants. After a warm welcome and thanks, DiVencenzo (who noted, in his speech, that Angelo Casarola’s painting, “The Catch” chronicled last year’s winning Superbowl play,) went on to hand out first place, second place and Honorable Mentions to the contestants. Kate Hartwyk, Director of Programs and Grants for the Division of Cultural and …
