First Female Rabbi Visits Livingston

Sally Priesand recently visited Temple Emanu-El of West Essex.

The first female ordained rabbi in the United States, Sally Priesand, recent spoke about her life at Temple Emanu-El of West Essex.  Priesand may have been the first, but countless other women followed her.  She started her April 15 presentation saying, “I decided I wanted to be a rabbi in 1962 at the age of 16. Fortunately, my parents gave me one of the greatest gifts a parent can give a child: the courage to dare and to dream." She continued: "With their encouragement, I was able to remain focused on my goal, relatively unconcerned that no woman had ever been ordained rabbi by a theological seminary and determined to succeed despite the doubts I heard expressed in the organized Jewish community.” Priesand was ordained in Cincinnati, Ohio…

First Ordained U.S. Female Rabbi to Speak Locally

Temple Emanu-El of West Essex to host Rabbi Sally Priesand on April 15.

Rabbi Sally Priesand, the first female rabbi ordained in the United States, will be the guest speaker at Temple Emanu-El of West Essex on Sunday, April 15 from 9:30-11 a.m. The event, which begins with a bagel breakfast, will feature Priesand giving a speech about “Reflections on My Life as a Rabbi.” In addition to authoring “Judaism and the New Woman,” Priesand is a contributor to “Woman Rabbis: Exploration and Celebration” as well as “A Treasury of Favorite Sermons by Leading American Rabbis.” She is a strong believer in many causes including justice and peace, equal opportunity for women, the needs of the hungry and the homeless and the survival of Israel. First Female Rabbi to Speak at Temple B'nai Abraham Nov. 4

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of becoming the first female rabbi, Rabbi Sally Priesand will made a stop on her lecture tour Friday, Nov. 4, at Livingston's Temple B'nai Abraham as part of a Kabbalat Shabbat Service, Symposium and Dinner sponored by the Temple B'nai Abraham Sisterhood and Social Action Committee. The Kabbalat Shabbat Service will begin at 6:30 p.m., with dinner and a symposium following at 7:30 p.m. Rabbi Priesand will speak about the topic "Reflections on My Life as a Rabbi," detailing her path from when she was ordained in June, 1972, by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio.
