Lee chats about John Cena, Jersey roots before WWE's hit show RAW hits Newark Monday
Newark is about to get RAW. WWE's popular weekly show returns to New Jersey Monday at the Prudential Center, delivering fans a dose of good ole-fashioned body slams and elbow drops. This installment is a homecoming for WWE's feisty tomboy diva AJ Lee, who's coming off an impressive upset last week over veteran Tamina Snuka. Lee, whose real name is April Jeanette Mendez and hails from Union City, dished to Patch about her elusive relationship with John Cena, stepping down as RAW's general manager in October and being back in the Garden State. Set the record straight: What is going on between you and John Cena? You started off with a hardball! You know what, it's one of those things where you're going to have to watch RAW and see it unfold. …

Thousands of singers come to downtown Newark Saturday to audition for show
They came from New York City and South Jersey and from western Pennsylvania with one goal in mind: musical stardom. Between 4,500 and 5,000 people converged on the Prudential Arena in Newark early Saturday to audition for Season 12 of American Idol, the blockbuster singing competition on Fox that has launched the careers of Kelly Clarkson , Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson and a host of other chart-toppers. (See the video for performances by hopefuls and for scenes from Saturday.) Most of the crowd was there by 5 am --- several had camped out since the night before -- and was fairly energetic despite the early hour. “Idol” staff kept the waiting contenders pumped with blaring pop and club music. The crowd was also instructed periodically to…

Hundreds greet team yesterday following heartbreaking Stanley Cup defeat in LA
They might not have won the Stanley Cup, but the New Jersey Devils still returned home to a hero's welcome yesterday, when they were greeted by several hundred fans who braved a steady rain at Prudential Center in Newark. New Jersey’s only NHL franchise lost the sixth of the seven-game series Monday against the Los Angeles Kings after overcoming a three-game deficit, raising hopes among fans here in the Garden State of a comeback the likes of which had not been seen in generations. But although it was not to be, plenty of Devils faithful were there nonetheless when the team bus arrived from Newark Liberty International Airport around 4:45 p.m. following a long flight home from the West Coast. The bus streamed past a crowd of fans chanting…

Amy Chiarello Barnett writes about one of the top 10 greatest nights of her life
I have always loved the music of “The Boss” although I cannot take credit for being one of “those” fans. The die hards who know every album, can argue song lyrics and set lists and tour dates and such. But I am a born and bred Jersey girl, and when our most famous native plays his premier gig in the largest city in the state, (not to mention in our own Essex County backyard)...well, attention must be paid. On Wednesday night, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band played for the first time at the Prudential Center in Newark. And I was there. My invitation to last night’s show came via my well-connected friend Kathy. Her late night text message asking “What are you doing tomorrow night?” set into motion one of the Top Ten All Time Greatest …

Seton Hall's ROTC adds a new twist to the National Anthem before the SHU-Rutgers game.
Before the Seton Hall Pirates took on in-state rivals Rutgers University on Saturday, the fans at Newark's Prudential Center in Newark were treated to a cool spectacle. Members of Seton Hall’s Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) rappelled down from the ceiling of the arena to start the festivities for the game. “It was an idea by the commanding officer of our ROTC,” said Cadet Sgt. 1st class Pete Smith. “He had done it once in college, so he thought it would be cool if we could do it.” Prior to the national anthem, Cadet Capt. Dan Knox and Cadet Capt. Will Moreo came down from the ceiling with the American flag. They stopped midway down and saluted the flag as the anthem was sung. Following the anthem, Smith came down to deliver …
