The Earth passed through a stream of debris from Halley's Comet beginning Monday, Oct. 15, which gives us the benefit of the annual Orionids meteor shower. The shower should be at its peak Saturday night until just before dawn and lucky for West Orange residents, Saturday night looks clear. According to AccuWeather.com, Saturday evening should have very good conditions for stargazing with a clear night and temperatures in the mid-40s. This year, the moon will be setting at about midnight, which will keep the sky darkened enough that -- barring cloud cover -- you should be able to see up to 15 meteors per hour. This salad, with the substantial addition of crispy bacon in a creamy sauce, is the perfect side dish to accompany dinner; alternatively, toss it with pasta for a light lunch.
Fresh peas are as different from frozen ones as sunshine is from a tanning bed. I watched the vines in my garden for weeks, feeling the fat round orbs through the pods until they were just the right size. Then I picked them all and made this salad to go with our roast chicken dinner. Sure, prep time is a little longer with fresh peas. But what better activity to accompany a warm summer evening than the mindless snap-pop-rattle of shelling? It pairs well with good conversation (I enlisted our dinner guest to help) and it's absolutely worth it for the huge difference in size, flavor and texture. Fresh peas only need a minute or two in a warm bath to transform into bright green, tender bites of spring sweetness. This salad is perfect with …

July 19 celebrates the refreshing cocktail.
Need an excuse to celebrate in the midst of this week's heat wave? July 19 is National Daiquiri Day. Although the drink was invented in 1898 in the tiny iron mining town of Daiquiri in Cuba by an engineer named Jennings Stockton Cox, it is a cocktail usually associated with author Ernest Hemingway. But Cox was the one who created the blend of lime juice, sugar, and local Bacardi rum over crushed ice as a way to boost the morale of mine workers when the hot summer heat became nearly unbearable. The original drink was made with lime juice, sugar, and white rum but then, around 1940, Hemingway inspired the frozen variety sold at El Floridita bar in Havana. Today you can order a daiquiri with almost any kind of fruit you could think of. For …

Assemblyman Robert Schroeder sponsors bill requiring emblem on buildings where solar panels are attached to the roof to protect firefighters from electrocution.
With an increasing number of buildings investing in alternative energy, emergency responders are often unable to immediately identify structures that have installed solar panels on their roofs — putting them at risk of electrocution in the event of a fire. In an effort to protect firefighters against the danger of electrocution posed by solar panels, Assemblyman Robert Schroeder (R-Woodcliff Lake), a volunteer firefighter in the Township of Washington since 1980 who has twice served as fire chief, has sponsored a bill that would require buildings to clearly label with an exterior emblem whether they have solar panels. The bipartisan bill was approved by the Assembly Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee, on which Schroeder …
