After 28 years, the Livingston-based camp is closed
Camp Horizons held its last Family Rocket Launch, and hosted its final Wednesday pizza lunch. After 28 years, the Livingston-based camp has closed, says owner Neil Rothstein, because Newark Academy has declined to renew the camp's lease. "The camp is over," said Rothstein. "We're very sad to leave." The camp has been located at Newark Academy for 28 years. Camp Horizons shared the campus with sports camps and summer academics offered by the school. "The school plans to expand the summer offerings," said Rothstein. Newark Academy could not be reached for comment at this time. Some 100,000 children, from grades K through nine, attended Camp Horizons over the past 28 years, many returning as counselors in training and then as counselors. …

Five area music students, include a Newark Academy sixth-grader, were honored late last month as the Mayo Performing Arts Center's Music Students of the Month, sponsored by Verizon. Maria Armas, who was nominated by her music teacher Michelle Uhler, has been taking private lessons with Uhler because she felt she wasn’t being challenged enough, according to a bio provided by the school. Uhler said Armas is a top-notch student who works really hard at whatever she does. Although she is not yet at the level of an "advanced" pianist, she practices almost 5 hours a week while still maintaining an “excellent academic average and participating in other activities as well.” Students were nominated by their teachers and were chosen by the theatre…

After conducting a nationwide search, Newark Academy has decided to promote from within and has named West Orange resident Ted Gilbreath its new athletic director effective July 1. Gilbreath, who has taught humanities at the school since 2005, has served as the head boys lacrosse coach at the school. “I was drawn to Newark Academy because I was looking for a challenging academic environment that valued experiences outside of the classroom as well,” he said, adding, “NA’s arts and athletics programs and its interest in global and cultural awareness were really intriguing to me,” Gilbreath said. “Accepting the position here has been one of the best decisions I’ve made,” he continued, “I love my current job, but I’m also excited to have the…

Newark Academy is presenting the art of Claude Victor Offray III at the school's McGraw Gallery from Oct. 1-Oct. 24. Offray is an alumnus of Newark Academy, graduating in 1974. The exhibit, titled Bending Light – Recollections and Reflections, is a retrospective of photographs taken from the early 1980s to the present. Offray has traveled extensively and the collection includes images from New York City, Prague, Paris, Italy, Amsterdam and Mexico. Offray’s compositions offer the viewer a passageway to follow into the scene, through actual roads, walls and fences. Often the pathway appears through the use of implied line that can appear as a stream of light or a shadow. He refers to these avenues as the line of infinity, which he …

Faculty, students sign wall for part of $8.2 million expansion.
Ground-breaking ceremonies are less about the actual dirt being dug and more about the promise of what's being built holds. That’s why Newark Academy’s event on Thursday was so important. “This is an historic moment,” said Donald Austin, the Head of School. “The new space will add immense value to our campus, strengthening our curricular initiatives and expanding the ways in which we teach and in which our students learn. This center will profoundly impact our community in a very positive way.” Construction and renovation plans for the first phase of the Upper School Academic Center will cost $8.2 million, according to Lisa Grider, director of Institutional Advancement, and means 18,500 square feet of new construction and 2,500 square feet…

Other camps should stop commenting on this because the kids will look into other camps and there is NO WAY anyone an compare to Camp Horizons. The camps that posted comments on this hurt some of the kids more because they loved Camp Horizons so much it's hard to think about just going to another camp that won't even compare to Camp Horizons. Thank you Neil for everything.   more ›
