Five area music students, include a Newark Academy sixth-grader, were honored late last month as the Mayo Performing Arts Center's Music Students of the Month, sponsored by Verizon. Maria Armas, who was nominated by her music teacher Michelle Uhler, has been taking private lessons with Uhler because she felt she wasn’t being challenged enough, according to a bio provided by the school. Uhler said Armas is a top-notch student who works really hard at whatever she does. Although she is not yet at the level of an "advanced" pianist, she practices almost 5 hours a week while still maintaining an “excellent academic average and participating in other activities as well.” Students were nominated by their teachers and were chosen by the theatre…
