What do you think of an option that ends school earlier but has seniors graduating on a Friday? Let the BOE know.
Editor’s Note: This story was written by Livingston Public Schools for its website. The Board of Education will decide on changes to the 2013-2014 school calendar on Monday, October 29, President Leslie Winograd said. The board is leaning toward an earlier end to the school year while keeping a full February break . But the calendar under review presents several caveats: The 2013-2014 calendar that was previously approved has school beginning Monday, September 9 and ending Wednesday, June 25. It includes a full February break, 3 snow days, and Thursday graduation. The Board decided to open the calendar discussion at the request of parents who asked for an earlier end of the school year. A district survey found that parents by a 2-to-…

The BOE's calendar discussion continues as the board and parents deal with the end of school/beginning of camp conflict.
The following has been submitted by Marilyn Joyce Lehren, Manager of Communications and Community Outreach for Livingston Public Schools: Changing the last day of school is being considered by the Livingston Board of Education, which discussed the calendar for the 2013-2014 school year at its workshop meeting on Monday night. The board was presented with three options by school administration, but no decision was made and the issue will once again be an agenda item for a possible vote when the board members next meet on Monday, October 16. School board members are taking another look at the 2013-2014 calendar, (a calendar that was previously approved), at the request of parents and camp directors who pointed out that the last day of school…

In a effort to streamline services and reduce costs, the township and board of education in Livingston have agreed to work together for fleet maintenance, according to a township release. The agreement, which began on April 1, started with the township’s Department of Public Works repairing the board of education’s fleet of 18 buses, 11 vans and 18 maintenance vehicles. Under the agreement, the board of education will reimburse the township for the cost of parts and supplies, and will pay the hourly rate for township staff to provide preventative maintenance and repairs as needed. “The Livingston Public Schools’ fleet is critical to the operation of the school district and our vehicles have historically been well maintained,” schools …

Residents seek answers regarding teacher contract negotiation status, special ed increases and projected energy savings.
Monday night, the Livingston Board of Education approved a $104 million 2012-2013 budget that Superintendent Dr. Brad Draeger called “a very fiscally responsible budget.” Draeger said additional state funding helped reduce the tax impact on Livingston residents. The board received $917,527 in mid-February 2011 from the state. Of that money, $700,000 was used for technology in last year’s budget. The remaining money carried over to this year’s budget. In addition, the state allocated an additional $917,527 last July, which was also carried over to the new budget. During the public portion of the meeting, residents addressed the board, voicing their concerns about the budget and the status of (teacher) contract negotiations. Dan Kaplan of …

New resolution also eliminates public vote on school budgets under spending cap.
In a special meeting held Tuesday night, the Livingston Board of Education unanimously voted to adopt a resolution moving the school board elections from April to the general election in November. This resolution is the result of a new state law that will also eliminate a public vote on the school budget, provided it falls within the state-mandated cap, currently established at two percent. "This is a long time coming," said board member Bonnie Granatir after the resolution was approved. In their meeting agenda, the board had said they believed passage of the resolution was in "the best interest of the Livingston community." Before voting, the board heard from the public, the majority of which favored approval of the resolution. …
