'Kicker's' Rich Wallace inspires kids to write at Hillside.
This article was submitted from Livingston Public Schools. Students in Livingston’s elementary schools put pencil to paper and expressed their creativity in literacy and writing celebrations over the past few months. Many schools invited parents to drop in for a visit and read what their children had spent weeks working on in class for their special writing projects. Some even created art work to go with their projects. Hillside Elementary School Principal Bernadette Pilchman said the school invited author Rich Wallace, known for his creative children’s books about sports, including the new “Kickers’ series, to visit and talk to students about his inspiration for writing children’s books. “I use my imagination to write like crazy,” Wallace…

Teachers Cycle for Survival, putting a meaningful spin on a day set aside for giving from the heart.
Teachers in Livingston schools know that kindness counts more this Valentine’s Day than flowers and chocolates. It’s a lesson on empathy they’ve been sharing with their students, literally, putting themselves in the shoes of others, or in this case, the sneakers of Jennifer Goodman Linn, the LHS graduate who has raised millions of dollars in sports clubs to help doctors find cures for rare cancers. Linn is battling a rare cancer that has inspired thousands to join her quest to put a positive spin on treatments. She's turned adversity into strength and opportunity to form the Cycle for Survival fundraiser, an event that raised more than $4.5 million this weekend alone at spinning events in major cities, and suburban Livingston, New Jersey, …
Empathy is learned by example as school supports Cycle for Survival.
Who: Hillside Elementary School. Accomplishments: They have HEART! Something we especially want to point out on Valentine's Day. At Hillside, HEART means: Helpful. Empathetic. Accepting. Responsible. Day camp owner makes a large donation to help the Cycle for Survival fund-raising efforts at Hillside School.
Roger Black of Livingston knows how it feels to lose a loved one to a rare cancer. His mother Nancy died five years ago – “five years and one month to be exact,” he says. Black graduated from Livingston High School in 1992 and knew Jennifer Goodman Linn, founder of Cycle for Survival, a charity that has raised more than $5 million for cancer research. “We all live our lives knowing we can do more,” said Black, owner of Stonybrook Day Camp. “This is a local cause. If we don’t get behind this, what do we have?” Linn has been battling a rare cancer for the past six years. She’s inspired thousands of people to help her in her efforts to support research on rare cancers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Rare cancers are far more …
