In Our Schools: Children in Haiti Benefit from a Teacher's Care

Plus, a Collins teacher is selected as Teacher of the Year.

1. June Volk, a fifth-grade teacher at Hillside Elementary School, lent a helping hand in Haiti during this holiday break. She spent the week at a Port-au-Prince hospital, treating children hurt in the devastating earthquake a year ago. “The trip was difficult, yet extraordinarily successful, “ she said. “We helped many very sick people and saved some lives, but there is so much that the Haitian people need, and at times this can seem overwhelming,” she said. Fifth-grade students at Hillside put together dozens of care packages for the trip. “The children in the clinic loved the gift bags and cards -- there were many smiles when they discovered what a Hershey Kiss was!” 2.
