High school and middle school spring productions continue around our area, while other stages host shows and concerts as diverse as a marionette show at SOPAC and a speakeasy show from Studio B. Columbia High School is opening its doors to adults for a day, and MoFiddles is bringing us a fine acoustic concert. Golda Och Academy's basketball game last week was one that will go down in history, literally. Junior Gloria Rothenberg of Livingston, scored her 1,000th basket minutes into the game Thursday against Newark's Central High School. Rothenberg is the first female athlete to reach this milestone at the school. The game was stopped before the second quarter for a brief surprise ceremony for Rothenberg. "It was an exciting and momentous occasion for Gloria and women's athletics at Golda Och," athletic director Janet Herman said in a statement. "She's a great role model for the kids, on and off the court. It couldn't have happened to a nicer kid." Rothenberg was named the most valuable player as a freshman and sophomore. For sixth year, students participate in Katrina Relief Mission
Students from Golda Och Academy of West Orange are volunteering for the sixth year in New Orleans as part of the school's Katrina Relief Mission. Starting today and running through Friday, 20 students from the private school will be working in the city, helping neighborhoods continue to recover from the devastating 2005 storm. During the past six years, Golda Och Academy has sent more than 100 members of the school community to help in the rebuilding efforts of New Orleans. Students and members of the school community have also collected hundreds of boxes of supplies and close to $10,000 to help residents of the Gulf Coast.

Golda Och Academy is seeking approval by theWest Orange Zoning Board to expand its lower campus on Gregory Avenue in West Orange. If approved, the $6 million plan would ease traffic conditions in the area, create a new driveway loop, erect a new building and include an outdoor student lounge area. "The goal was to come up with a design that will allow the school to compete with schools being designed today," said Anthony Guzzo from Guzzo + Guzzo Architects, LLC, the plan’s architect. He said the new 32-ft building is not meant to increase student population but create "dedicated" art, science and music rooms. Rosh Hashanah lesson at Golda Och Academy brings home message of atonement.
Slih'a, the Hebrew word for sorry, was the theme of teacher Paula Spack's first grade Rosh Hashanah lesson this past Monday morning. Speaking predominately in Hebrew, Spack, a teacher at the conservative Jewish Golda Och Academy, led her 16 students through a series of activities and stories designed around the New Year holiday's message of atonement. The lesson, targeted for 6 year olds, focused on saying I'm sorry for mistakes made during the year. Spack started the lesson by blowing the shofar, an instrument traditionally made of a ram's horn, and used in Jewish ceremonies to welcome the New Year. She asked her students what the shofar was saying. Students collectively responded, "Shana Tova," which means a good year in Hebrew. She …
