Wine, appetizers, and an auction were the ingredients used to cook up a philanthropic event on August 28. The Northwest NJ Region of The Amerian Cancer Society hosted its very first wine tasting fundraiser at The Suite Spot. The organization used its newest event as a way to finish the summer season on a strong note. Special Events Manger, Christen Reese told Patch that although a wine tasting is “not the traditional ACS fundraiser, we hoped the event would bring out a young, vibrant crowd.” With a $40 entrance fee, attendees were treated to an all-you-can-eat appetizer buffet and washed it all down with a variety of red, white, blush, and dessert wines. The drinks were proved by Alba Vineyard, and representatives educated the crowd on …

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society's MuckRuckus MS obstacle course is this weekend at the South Mountain Reservation.
One national charity has found a way to combine fundraising and fun, drawing hundreds of people to South Mountain Reservation this weekend to raise awareness for multiple sclerosis by bringing them to an obstacle course and mud pits. For the past week, crews have been building the MuckRuckus MS obstacle course in the open space across from McLoone’s Boathouse located in the county’s recreation complex. Local family raises a child with albinism with support from NOAH. What do you know about albinism? Would you like to learn more?
If you ask a pregnant woman what she wants to have, you will almost always get the same answer – “A healthy baby.” We all fear the worst and hope for the best. We do the best we can to be healthy and eat and drink all the things that are good for our baby. We live for nine months with the slight fear in the back of our minds, the stories of babies who have one condition or another that can be caused by the mother doing something during pregnancy. My husband is Chinese and I am Caucasian. During my pregnancy, we dreamed of our baby. A little boy with light Asian features. No doubt he would have black hair and dark brown eyes. Try to imagine our surprise when the big day came, we went to the hospital to have our baby and when he came out …

The fundraiser is designed to raise awareness of heart disease and educate the kids on how they might avoid it. “'Hoops For Heart' is tied into their lesson on nutrition while it gives them a good cardio workout and brings them together for a good cause. Plus it teaches them responsibility and brings them together as a team,” MPMS Principal Debra Ostrowski explained. “I think it’s important to raise awareness about heart disease,” said sixth-grader Mark Steinberg, who was getting quite a workout with the hula hoop -- a …

Many families crumble when a member is diagnosed with cancer. Not the Becker family. When 12-year old Sydney, a 7th grader at Heritage Middle School, received news that she had osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, in her left leg, the family rallied. They formed “Team Sydney,” had T-shirts printed up and Sydney herself designed the logo (a pink high-top since that’s what she usually wears) with the phrase “Kickin’ Cancer’s Butt” on the back because that’s what she’s determined to do. Then they looked outside of their own situation and decided to sell the shirts and donate the profits to Make Some Noise: Cure Kids’ Cancer Foundation, which raises funds for research into pediatric cancer, as well as promoting awareness of the disease. …

The Children's Institute, a school for children with learning, language and social/emotional challenges, is hoping an institute-inspired creation by none other than "Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro himself will be the icing on top for their annual fundraiser. Valastro toured the school last week with the institute's Executive Director, Dr. Bruce Ettinger, and a host of institute staffers eager to sneak a peak at the TLC star in tow. As he entered a number of classrooms, Valastro warmly greeted students and teachers, and answered a barrage of questions from kids who were excited and curious to be face-to-face with a celebrity chef; "What time is your show on?" ("Weekdays at 5:30."); "What's your last name?" ("Valastro.") "Do you make a lot of …
