Lancers say goodbye to winter sports season.
Livingston got lucky when the New Balance National Championship meet ran behind schedule last Friday, allowing the distance medley relay team to make it on time after being stuck in traffic crossing the George Washington Bridge into New York. But a few minutes into the race at the New Balance Track and Field Center, the Lancers’ luck ran out when misfortune struck as leadoff man Nick Fogarty dropped the baton on the 1,200 leg. The rest of the race didn’t get much better for the Lancers, who wound up finishing 26th in its final meet of the season in 10:39.43, well off the 10:16.04 that it ran on March 1. But Livingston’s season should not be remembered for how it ended, but rather for the amazing journey it took. Livingston put itself on …

LHS distance medley relay runs 3rd fastest time in the nation this season.
Over the last few weeks, Jeramy Elkaim missed out on chance to be a state group champion and skipped running at the high profile Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle. Why? Because Elkaim, who had a slight knee issue at the beginning of February, chose to sacrifice an opportunity at personal glory to ensure that he was 100 percent and ready to help his team run its best in the distance medley relay at the 74th Eastern States Championships last Tuesday at the New Balance Track and Field Center in New York. "I wanted to make sure I was at my best to help us run as fast as possible at Easterns,’’ said the Oregon-bound Elkaim. Elkaim’s decision to sit out the state Group 4 meet last month and the Brooks meet last Sunday, paid off as he anchored …

Fencers Ed Chin and brothers Jason and Ray Cai take second at squad states.
Jason Estevez took home the Region 4 crown in wrestling and brothers Jason and Ray Cai, along with Ed Chin, just missed out on first place at the squad championships in fencing to highlight a busy weekend of sports for Livingston high school. Estevez, a sophomore, earned his first region title and earned his way to the state final which begins on Friday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City at 5 p.m. Estevez downed Jimmy Ciampi of West Essex, 10-8, in the 125-pound final on Saturday in West Orange. Estevez punched his ticket to A.C. with a 7-2 defeat of Tyler Loughlin of Becton in the semifinals. The top three finishers in each weight class advance to the state final. Estevez, who won his first District 14 crown last weekend, upped his season…

Boys bring home school’s first titles, girls qualify for state team tournament for first time.
Livingston high school’s fencing teams achieved several milestones and set the stage for an exciting finish to the season with its performance at the NJSIAA/Bollinger District 3 championships. The girls team qualified for the state team tournament for the first time and the boys delivered the Lancers’ first gold medals at the event, storming to the sabre team- and individual-titles led by Ray Cai. The girls, who were tabbed the 13th seed, will try for an upset in the first round of the playoffs against the state’s consensus top team, fourth-seeded and defending-champion Northern Highlands, in Allendale on Feb. 8. The Lancers boys team, which also placed fourth in the district and was seeded 13th, will open the state team tournament with …

Young Lancers team earns a 6th-place finish at Santelli Tournament.
Last season, the Livingston girls’ fencing team took a big step forward with a district foil title. On Sunday, at the Santelli Tournament, the five-year old program made an even bigger move in the right direction, turning in its best performance to date at the event. The Lancers ended up 10th in foil and 16th in sabre, while the epee squad made it into the top final pool to earn eighth place, en route to a sixth place finish in the overall standings at the competition at Morris Knolls in Denville. Livingston placed 25th last winter and 26th the year before at the Santelli. Senior captain Kelly Ng, who has spearheaded the team’s fast start from the A strip of the foil line, going 12-1 in dual meets, suffered only a single loss in the …
