The event honors Livingston's Jennifer Goodman Linn
On Feb. 9, Capt. Fred Kingston of West Orange’s FMBA Local 28 and 228 will be leading a team of firefighters into the line of fire -- but this time it won’t involve a burning building. Instead, together they will be fighting rare cancers. Kingston and his 11-person team will be participating in The Cycle for Survival, the national indoor team cycling event that funds research on rare cancers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Donations to the West Orange FMBA Local 28 & 228 Team can be made on the Team's page. “The men and women of the West Orange FMBA Local 28 and 228 will be cycling in hope of finding a cure for all cancers,” said Kingston, who also rode last year. Aretha Franklin performs as thousands gather for Celebrating Life and Liberty event.
Lauren Heaney’s daughter Emilia was only 6 months old when she as told she had lymphoma. Heaney never felt sorry for herself. She had a single goal in mind from the minute she was diagnosed: Survive. “It was never, ‘I hope I’m going to beat this.’ It was always ‘I’ve got to fight harder’,” said Heaney, a first-grade teacher in Wayne. Heaney was the emcee of the fourth annual Celebrating Life and Liberty gathering. More than 3,000 attended the event Sunday at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. The John Theurer Cancer Center (JTCC) at Hackensack University Medical Center sponsored the event. Today marks the last day of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), a national organization with local branches, has made it its mission to spread awareness, help those affected cope and raise funds for cancer research during November. In Livingston, a member of PanCAN spoke at the November 2 township council meeting. Michael Weinstein, a local advocacy coordinator for the group, addressed the council on the disease; for his efforts, the township council issued a proclamation to observe Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.
