For a woman with cancer, having a bald head, pale skin or a missing breast can make her feel like she's being targeted by a bright spotlight and a banner that says, "Cancer patient." This year, an estimated 226,870 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Of those, close to 40,000 will die of the disease. According to the American Cancer Society, there is no sure way to prevent breast cancer, but there are things you can do to reduce your risk of the disease. Genetic risk factors account for a mere 5% to 10% of breast cancer cases. Generally speaking, a woman in New Jersey has a one in 77 chance of getting breast cancer, according to this breast cancer statistics chart from komen.org. An American woman in her 30s has a one in 232 chance of getting the disease, and a woman 20 years her senior has a one in 42 probability, according to the website. “Although we aren’t certain, the cause of breast cancer in younger women is likely caused by a genetic predisposition,” says Ann H. Partridge, M.D., M.P.H., the medical oncologist director of the Adult Survivorship Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The Department of Psychosocial Support Services in the Cancer Program at Saint Barnabas Medical Center will sponsor a free Breast Cancer Symposium on Monday, October 29 from 6-9 p.m. in the hospital’s Islami Auditorium. The second annual event helps raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness.
The Livingston Senior, Youth and Leisure Services and Livingston Health Department are getting ready to hold its 2nd annual “Zumba for the Cure Fundraiser” to support October Breast Cancer Awareness month. The event will be held this Saturday, October 20 from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Senior Community Center. The event features a lot of door prizes and raises funds for the Susan G. One in 8 American women and 1 in 1,000 American men will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. It’s estimated that more than 2 million people are diagnosed with breast cancer and fight for their lives each year. Breast cancer is difficult to face alone—for both patients and their loved ones. The township shows their support for breast cancer awareness.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Livingston Health Department's Nursing Division is doing their part to keep the public informed about breast cancer. On Friday, the department held a “Tie a Pink Ribbon” Ceremony at the gazebo on the Oval. The department distributed educational information, posters and hand outs to residents to help them understand the dangers of breast cancer. The information eas donated by the Susan G. The Livingston Health Department will be holding a ceremony on Friday morning.
The Livingston Health Department's Nursing Division is doing their part to keep the public informed about breast cancer. On Friday, the department will be holding a “Tie a Pink Ribbon” Ceremony from 12-1 p.m. in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness at the gazebo on the Oval. To honor October as Breast Cancer Awareness month, the department will be distributing educational information, posters, and hand-outs to residents. The information will be donated by the Susan G. Komen foundation and Saint Barnabas Breast Center. The event is free and for all age groups. Pink balloons will mark the site. In case of rain ,the event will move inside Town Hall.

Maplewood's GenWealth hosted first annual event in support of breast cancer research.
On Saturday morning, more than 70 women, men and children participated in the first annual GenWealth Walks for Hope, a three-mile walk through Maplewood Village to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. The event raised a total of $10,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF). The walk was led by Risa Olinsky, owner and president of "Count on Yourself Coaching," and GenWealth Group's founders Michael and Cherie Leanza and team members Braden Shipke and Kim DiBlasi. The Leanzas were inspired to launch the walk when DiBlasi's mother was diagnosed last year with Stage 4 breast cancer. Walkers shared stories of how breast cancer has touched their families.
