It’s estimated that more than 2 million people are diagnosed with breast cancer and fight for their lives each year. Breast cancer is difficult to face alone—for both patients and their loved ones. To help in the battle, there are a number of local resources and support groups nearby: Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson holds a support group in Spanish for women with breast cancer the first and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 5 to 6 p.m. in room 6114A in the Seton building. Awarded to college students whose lives have been affected by breast cancer.
One of the first recipients of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Scholarship was Cristina Nemeth, who lost her mother to breast cancer when she was five years old. For Nemeth, winning the scholarship meant returning to Ramapo College to finish her course of study in biology. “When I was awarded this scholarship, I cried because I couldn’t believe it was real! Without this scholarship, I would have never been able to return to college,” said Nemeth. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization offers scholarships each year to college students whose lives have been affected by breast cancer. Susan G. Komen is currently accepting scholarship applications. The rain didn't seem to dampen anyone's spirit Sunday morning as waves of people flooded the South Mountain Recreational Complex in West Orange for the fourth annual North Jersey Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The 5K run and 5K walk drew more than 7,500 participants, some clad in pink and others wearing T-shirts celebrating loved ones who had survived breast cancer. For West Orange resident and recent breast cancer victim Sharon Scalora, the endless sea of pink encouraged her fight against the disease. "You can see all these people here that are survivors, every single one of them has been through it so that helps me," said Scalora. "Knowing that they were able to do it, I will be able to do it. I have to do it." Scalora, 43, is a …

New bereavement camp offers a summer haven so children know they are not alone.
Over three years ago, Casey Holstein's wife died after a five-year battle with breast cancer. Not only did it make Holstein a widower, it made him a single father of two daughters. Knowing the disease would eventually kill his wife Robin, he did everything he could to prepare not only himself but his two girls, who are now 10 and 12 years old. And preparing his children before and then helping them after could be a tremendous task. "They're the only ones in their social circle who don't have a mother," said the South Orange resident. "It weighs on them and they're still conscious of that today." The girls have women around them and a great amount of support, he said. But at the end of the day, 99 percent of people they know can't relate to…
