The Board of Education will have a new look in 2013.
The Livingston Board of Education held their reorganization meeting on Monday night, swearing in two new members and voting a new President of the board. The newly elected members, Pamela Chirls and Dr. David Jasin, took the oath of office and will be replacing retiring members Bonnie Granatir and Chuck Granata. Jasin and Chirls were elected in November's election. Ronnie Spring, a BOE member since 2010, was named the new President, replacing Leslie Winograd, who will remain as a member of the board. Barry Funt was selected as Vice President, replacing Spring who held the position last year. The BOE's next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Livingston High School auditorium.

Board of Education members refute Funt's allegations over payments for legal fees.

Board of Education members defended themselves Tuesday against allegations made by school board candidate Barry Funt, who claimed they misused public funds in filing an ethics complaint against a former school board member. Board President Bonnie Granatir and members Antonio Calcado and Charles Granata contested Funt's comments on the divisive ethics issues, releasing a press release refuting his comments "that they have engaged in fiscal impropriety or misappropriated public funds." Next week, Livingston voters will have a choice between two candidates for Livingston Board of Education, Barry Funt and Ray Leibman. Funt is a father of children in the schools running a campaign against ethics charges that have dogged the school board since last spring. Leibman is an educator who put two children through Livingston public schools with strong views on education reform. The League of Women Voters has a question for the candidates for the Livingston Board of Education: Why Are You Running At This Time? It’s nothing personal. The League is interested in learning how the candidates plan to meet head-on the myriad challenges facing public schools. It will be a two-man race for the Livingston Board of Education: Ray Leibman vs. Barry Funt. The candidates will compete for one open seat on the school board, according to petitions filed this week. Funt is no stranger to politics. He ran two years ago for the New Jersey State Assembly. Leibman sits on Livingston’s 20/20 Vision committee. I agree with Mr. Levine's comments regarding the inappropriateness of Mr. Funt's basing his entire campaign on the unfounded ethics issue. The facts - and the documents - speak for themselves.
