Newark Bears Set to Open 2012 Season

Community-focused Bears start season Thursday night against Worcester Tornadoes.

The Newark Bears had one final tune-up Wednesday afternoon before Opening Day and the start of their 15th season Thursday. The opponent however wasn't another team of professionals or a future opponent in the CanAm League the Bears participate in. Instead, it was the baseball team of Newark Tech High School. While it was merely an exhibition, the event was just the latest example of how the Bears are not just trying to be a winning team on the field but a part of the Newark community. "I think it's very important," said new Bears manager Ken Oberkfell about having that relationship with the city. "You want to meet as many people, as many organizations, as many businesses as you can. It promotes the team, it gets people into the ballpark. …

Livingston Rallies to Knock off West Orange

Livingston and West Orange squared off on Wednesday for the second meeting between the two division foes. Livingston won the first match up 7-0. The result was the same for Livingston the second time around.

Seniors Connor Kimmel and Jordan Farber—the trusty middle infield for Livingston—led the Lancers to a 6-4 victory over conference foe West Orange on Wednesday. Kimmel and Farber combine to go 4-for-8 with a pair of homeruns and knocking in four of Livingston’s six runs. “We’re a pretty good fastball hitting team and we got into counts where we expected fastballs,” Kimmel said.  “We were facing one of the better pitches in the county and we knew we had to make him work.” Livingston faced West Orange’s righty Adam Miller.  Miller pitched incredible this season even though his win-loss record does not indicate that.  Miller is 1-7, but has a 1.71 ERA (earned run average) and averages 7 strikeouts a game. “Adam has been great for us all year…

Team Sunsmart Coming to Livingston High School

Program promotes the use of sunscreen by student athletes.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Medical studies have shown that just one or two severe sunburns in childhood or early adulthood doubles the chance of developing skin cancer later in life. To combat this, the Ray Festa Melanoma Foundation has partnered with the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association to launch Team Sunsmart, a program that promotes the use of sunscreen by student athletes. This May, the partnership will push out Team SunSmart’s message in order to engage athletic trainers to help educate their students on the importance of wearing sunscreen. The program will be distributing information and posters to athletes in New Jersey detailing the dangers of severe sun exposure at a young age…

Livingston Comes Out Ahead in County Championship

Top seeded Livingston defeats Belleville in finals.

The Livingston boys volleyball team came out victorious in the annual Essex County Tournament finals on Saturday afternoon in Bloomfield, defeating Belleville 2-0 (25-11, 25-19). Belleville made it close, holding a lead late in the second of a best of three series, but the Lancers were just too much for the Buccaneers, who saw a late 19-16 lead, turn into a 25-19 Game 2 loss.  Belleville never got going in the opening game, with Livingston seizing almost immediate control and then cruising to a Game 1 victory. However, down 1-0 with their backs against the proverbial wall, the Buccaneers showed some fight and were actually in control for most of the second game. "My kids unfortunately play nervous in every first game in a big match, and …

New Jersey Marathon Has Banner Year; Livingston Runners Represented

About 13,000 racers participate in 2012 race.

The many changes to the 2012 New Jersey Marathon including a new starting location and time, did not stop a huge number of runners and spectators from flocking to Oceanport and Long Branch on Sunday. About 13,000 participants enjoyed a perfect day and raced through the streets of several local towns as they raced to a finish on the Promenade in Long Branch. The race's new starting location of Monmouth Park eased parking and some traffic concerns for participants, and a shuttle service to and from the race track helped tired runners and spectators reach their destinations. Jason Page, of Durham, N.C., won the full marathon with a lightning fast time of 2:33:13. He finished first in a group of 2,304 runners. The half marathon, which traveled…

Jay-Z Unveils New Brooklyn Nets Logo

Co-owner Jay Z designed a new logo for the basketball team, which was unveiled this week. What Do You Think of the Nets' New Brooklyn Logo?

The new "Brooklyn Nets" unveiled their team logos at a sporting goods store in Brooklyn on Monday.  The Nets' logos now have a look that combines design elements from the New Jersey Nets brand with the words, "Brooklyn, New York," surrounding a basketball. "The Brooklyn Nets logos are another step we’ve made to usher the organization into a new era," said hip-hop artist and team co-owner Jay Z, who designed the logos. "Along with our move to Brooklyn and a state-of-the-art arena, the new colors and logos are examples of our commitment to update and refine all aspects of the team." With the new logos, Jay-Z emerged as a triple-threat for the Brooklyn Nets organization—serving as co-owner, soon-to-be Barclays Center headliner and now, it …

This logo can be for just about anything from the 50's and 60's. It is overstuffed with lines and gets lost in the translation. A subway token had more wow to it.   more ›

Girls Camp Promises More Than Lacrosse Skills

A summer camp aims to teach girls lacrosse and build self-esteem. Scholarships are available.

Getting and keeping kids involved in team sports is a challenge for many parents — and even more so for parents of girls. "Researchers have found that anywhere from 30-70% of kids drop out of sports by the time they are 13 years old, and the number one reason why they quit is that they aren't having any fun," notes Dr. Richard D. Ginsburg, sport psychology consultant. Laura Gump, the co-founder of Sum It Up For Girls Lacrosse — based in Summit, NJ — started the company in 2007 to offer summer camps and clinics that would encourage teamwork and promote positive self-esteem among young girls. Above all, her emphasis is to teach the skills of lacrosse through games and activities designed to remind the girls that sports are supposed to be fun…

Lovi Honored By BOE for 1,000 Wins (Video)

Boys Tennis Coach Elliot Lovi reached the 1,000 win plateau on April 21 after 39 years with the program.

At Monday's Board of Education meeting, the BOE honored a true legend in Livingston sports, Elliot Lovi.   For 39 years, Lovi has guided the Livingston Lancers in boys tennis and on April 21, he became the first coach nationwide to amass 1,000 career wins.  Known for being humble, Lovi preferred to reflect on the people he's coached and coached with, instead of his own accomplishment. "It's special," Lovi told Patch about his accomplishment.  "The best part of this has been the people who have contacted me, people I haven't heard from in years.  In the last few days, I've spoken to players I've coached even back in the 70's.  Modern technology, it's good." One of those who reached out to him was Verona girls tennis coach Pat Schoenig, who …
