Kiwanis Names Livingston High Senior Its Youth of the Year

Emily Nevola spends a lot her time away from school serving the community in numerous capacities.

The Livingston Kiwanis Committee recently announced its Youth Citizen of the Year: Livingston High School senior Emily Nevola, according to The Alternative Press.

Nevola, who volunteers for a host of community efforts including Kiwanis, received a plaque and a contribution to the charity or organization she selects, the article said.

A sampling of the teenager's many civic-minded activities includes Girl Scouts, Livingston High's PB&J Club, Meals on Wheels, Kiwanis' Key Club and the Livingston Advisory Committee for Disabilities.

In fact, Nevola said the LACD, which works to integrate special-needs kids into the mainstream and to fight bullying, is her choice to receive the Kiwanis donation check.

Next up for the busy teen is completing a community project so that she can earn a Girl Scouts Gold Award, the organization' highest youth honor, according to the article. Nevola's plan is to start an effort called "Share Your Sports." The project would allow people to donate sports equipment, new or used, to be refurbished and distributed to a YMCA and to the Livingston Shining Stars.

When the young woman officially starts her senior year at LHS in the fall, she will continue her volunteer work with LACD and the Key Club, as well as her more musical pursuits—singing with the high school glee choirs Chamber Singers and Notations and serving as guard captain for the LHS Marching Band.

“Emily is exemplary of what Kiwanis stands for," Helen Flores, co-chair of the Kiwanis Youth Citizen of the Year committee, told The Alternative Press.
