Cooling Centers Open as Heat Index Tops 100 This Week

See where to cool down in Livingston this week as the heat index hits the 100s.

Livingston will open cooling centers in town as the heat index will make it feel in the 100s this week. 

Residents can stop by the following locations to cool down during the heat:

  • The Senior/Community Center, located at 204 Hillside Ave., will be open between 8:30 a.m. and 10 p.m.
  • The Livingston Public Library, located at 10 Robert Harp Drive, will be open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. 
  • Town hall, located at 357 S. Livingston Ave., will be open between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. 
  • The Livingston Mall, located at 112 Eisenhower Parkway, will be open between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. 

In addition, Essex County Codey Arena, located at 560 Northfield Ave., West Orange is available to the public as a cooling center Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The National Weather Service has announced an Heat Advisory for western Essex County, among other places.

On Wednesday, the NWS predicts Livingston's temperature will hit a high of 95 degrees but the heat index will make it feel in the 100s. Wednesday night's temperature is expected to dip to 74 degrees. 

The rest of the week doesn't look any better. The highs/lows are expected to be:
  • Thursday: 95/75 with a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms
  • Friday: 95/76
  • Saturday: 91/72 with a 50 percent chance of rain
The NWS suggests you drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioned rooms and out of the sun, check in with relatives and neighbors, and do most of your strenuous activity in the early morning or evening.
