Lancer Wrestlers Dominate Belleville

Livingston grapplers use six pinfalls en route to impressive victory.

With its full lineup back intact, the Livingston High School wrestling team flexed some muscle in a 57-18 Super Essex Conference American Division victory over Belleville on Wednesday in the Health and Wellness Center at Livingston High School.

"We came off a big win against West Essex without a full lineup," said Livingston head coach Pat Trabucco. "Now we have a full lineup, and they train hard and do what they're supposed to do."

The Lancers controlled the match from its onset, dropping just three bouts; two of which came by forfeit. Livingston 189-pounder Brent Blank-Singer got his team out to an initial 3-0 lead with a 9-4 minor decision over Belleville's Frank Perez, winning the third period 6-1.

"Livingston usually can wrestle hard for six minutes," Trabucco explained. "We're ususally one of the better-conditioned teams, and in high school wrestling it usually comes down to who's in better condition. It looks like he's (Blank-Singer) starting off slow, but the kid's fresh and just broke him."

Lancer 112-pounder Jason Estevez posted the most impressive decision of the match, however. He defeated Belleville's Justin Colon 2-0.

"Our 112-pounder (Estevez) beat the defending region champ (Colon) which is big for him because he's only a freshman," said Trabucco.

Another bout of note was at 130 pounds between Livingston's Mitchell McDonald and Belleville's Anthony Avino. McDonald was nearly pinned late in the second period, but took the bout to three tied at five with a reversal. Then trailing 7-6 late in the third period, McDonald again reversed Avino, this time pinning him at 5:25.

"He (McDonald) is a 112 pounder so anything he does at 125 is to his own toughness," Trabucco said.

Other Lancer pinfall winners included Keith Arlotta (125), Justin Estevez (135), Brad Crosser (140) Anthony Paris (171) and Mark Silverberg (215).

Livingston (3-2) will wrestle a tri-match against Passaic Valley and Roselle Park, 10 a.m on Saturday at Roselle Park High School.
