Congressman Frelinghuysen Fails To Lead On Gun Control

Frelinghuysen should support legislation that would expand background checks, says a local resident in Rodney Frelinghuysen's district.

Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11), at his town hall Hall meeting in Verona on Sept. 23, explained his failure to support HR 1565 (a bill that would expand the federal background check system) by stating that, "We need to enforce the laws we have before we enact new ones."

The gun lobby consistently uses the same argument as a rationale for their flagrant opposition for common sense gun laws.

It is disheartening to hear Rep. Frelinghuysen use the same language as the National Rifle Association. He represents a district where 97 percent of his constituents support universal background checks.

Frelinghuysen should support legislation that would expand background checks.  His constituents don't want to hear quotes from NRA Executive Vice President and principal spokesman Wayne LaPierre; they want common sense gun reform.

This letter to the editor was written by Charles Pestcoe, of North Caldwell, which is part of Frelinghuysen's district.
