Drunk-Driving Pennsylvania Man Is Pepper Sprayed After Resisting Arrest, Police Say

Sean Egan, 34, of Scranton, Pa., was charged with driving while intoxicated, eluding a police officer and more and placed on $50,000 bail.

Livingston Police arrested a Pennsylvania man on Monday who was drunk driving and had to be pepper sprayed after he tried to escape from police and resisted arrest, according to Livingston Det./Sgt. Anthony Dippold. 

Sean Egan, of Scranton, Pa., was driving on Route 10 and coming from Best Buy in East Hanover around 4:30 p.m., according to Dippold  Employees at the electronic store called Livingston Police and alleged someone driving a black Ford Expedition may have shoplifted from the store, according to Dippold. 

Livingston Police saw Egan, who is 34 years old, driving the same model SUV and attempted to pull him over, according to Dippold  Egan allegedly was speeding and attempting to flee from the pursuing police cruiser, said Dippold.

Egan finally swerved his SUV onto the shoulder of the highway and then into the parking lot of the former mattress store Sleep's, at 455 W. Mt. Pleasant Ave., according to Dippold  Egan led police through the parking lot to the rear of the building where he was stopped by a wall and fence, said Dippold. 

When he exited his car, Egan did not listen to the commands of the Livingston officer and he failed to remove his hands from his pockets, said Dippold.

The officer then pepper sprayed Egan, who then fell to the ground, said Dippold  When the officer handcuffed Egan, he reported smelling a "strong odor" of alcohol, said Dippold. 

An open bottle of Mad Dog, an alcoholic drink, was found inside of Egan's SUV, said Dippold. 

Egan was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters, said Dippold. He was charged with driving under the influenc, eluding a police officer, resisting arrest and various other motor vehicle violations, said Dippold. He was never charged with shoplifting from Best Buy, said Dippold. 

Egan is being held on $50,000 bail. He was transported to the Essex County Jail, said Dippold.
