Livingston Man Avoids Deer, Crashes Ambulance, Cops Say

An ambulance transporting a patient from Overlook Hospital to Morristown Medical Center crashed on the side of the road after the driver swerved to avoid deer, Morris Township Police said.

The driver, Nicholas Houmis, 25, of Livingston, was driving southbound on Normandy Parkway at 4:23 a.m. Wednesday when two deer ran into the road, he told police. Houmis said he then pulled the steering wheel to the left to avoid the deer, and in the process, went off the road, causing him to hit multiple small trees before the ambulance came to a stop some 50 feet from the road, police said.

The ambulance was occupied by a nurse, patient, and one of the patient’s family members, police said. Because of the crash, the occupants reported minor injuries and discomfort, but did not need additional medical attention, police said.

While the crash is still being investigated, no charges have been made against Houmis, police said.
