Temple B’nai Abraham Bike Collection (& Portable Sewing Machines, too!) for Pedals for Progress

Recycle Your Used Bikes & Portable Sewing Machines…don’t throw away those unwanted bicycles and portable sewing machines as we can help you put them to good use! On Sunday, April 6, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Temple B’nai Abraham’s Social Action and Membership Committees and Men’s Club will be sponsoring a collection for Pedals for Progress (P4P), a non-profit New Jersey-based charity that collects processes and donates used bicycles to the working poor in third-world countries. The temple is located at 300 E Northfield Road, Livingston. At this event, working, portable sewing machine will also be collected. TBA member Alec Laken will chair this collection at the temple. No early or late drop-offs will be accepted. The collection at B’nai Abraham will only take place on the date and time frame listed above.

Pedals for Progress  promotes bicycle repair businesses in the developing world and is helping people by promoting self- sustaining bicycle repair businesses. Contributing to P4P means making progress without pollution. Please note: Bikes must be in repairable condition relatively rust free. Frames or bikes with rusted frames will not be accepted. It costs on average $40 a bike to get them to their new home fixed up. We request a minimum donation of $10 to accompany every bike to support the shipping and handling costs. By also collecting portable sewing machines, P4P can piggyback them onto the bike shipments destined for recipient projects. Once there, seamstresses and tailors alike can acquire their most valuable tool and begin a business. Students can learn to sew—many of these machines will outfit programs in schools, teaching people a valuable skill they can use anywhere. Only portable sewing machines in working order will be accepted. For information regarding the TBA collection, please call 973.994.2290 or go to www.tbanj.org.

For information regarding other collection sites and dates, please contact Pedals for Progress NJ headquarters at 908.638.4811 or visit the P4P website at www.p4p.org
