Richard F. Iglar, Skoloff & Wolfe, P.C., Argues Palimony Case In Supreme Court of New Jersey

Livingston, New Jersey – Richard F. Iglar of Skoloff & Wolfe, P.C., argued before the Supreme Court of New Jersey in the high-profile family law case of Maeker v. Ross.  Prior case law in New Jersey recognized claims for palimony, involving the enforcement of oral promises of financial support between unmarried cohabitants.  The New Jersey Legislature, however, passed a statute which provided that no such promise would be enforceable unless in writing and entered into after consultation with counsel.  Mr. Iglar argued on behalf of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, which had been granted amicus curiae status by the Supreme Court, to join in the arguments of the parties and be heard on an issue of public importance.  Mr. Iglar argued that the new statute should not be applied retroactively to deny claims based on oral promises predating the statute.  The parties await the Supreme Court’s ruling in the matter.

Mr. Iglar is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), one of the preeminent national organizations for family law practitioners.  He is a member of the Board of Managers of its New Jersey Chapter.  Mr. Iglar has provided expert legal commentary in a range of media, analyzing family law topics, including custody, business valuation, the development of New Jersey family law and high-profile cases.  He has appeared on television and radio, and has been quoted in numerous publications, in print and online.  Mr. Iglar has been certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Matrimonial Law Attorney and has been consistently recognized as a SuperLawyer by SuperLawyers magazine, and as published in New Jersey Monthly
