Why is everyone running low on gas?? We were told to fill up the cars with gas before this happened and also fill up the gas containers. Where is all the gas going? It can't make sense to spend $$ on gas for a generator to save $100 worth of food in a fridge unless I'm missing something.
Thirty Four November 03, 2012 at 02:12 AM
Seventy percent of gas stations are not operational. No matter how we use, the gas will be running low. Maybe and just maybe, Walter, the generators can be used to power space heaters which can help kids to get though the nights such as tonight with the real feel temperature of 36 degree at the moment.

Never, ever use a generator to power a space heater. The danger of fire is real.
Thirty Four November 04, 2012 at 03:33 PM
Please help educate me (and perhaps others) on why using portable heater from generator will have higher risk of fire than using it from the regular household outlet. Please elaborate on the reasons.

I realize this is not a top priority, but will Halloween or trick-or-treating still occur this monday? Im not big on Halloween, but I do believe that everyone, espec. kids need their spirits lifted, so I will be prepared & have my doors open for water, candy, recharging, etc ...!

Portable electric heaters should NEVER be connected to an extension cord! Every heater has a warning to that effect. Therefore unless you connect the heater cord directly to the generator it should not be used. Using an extension cord with an electric heater is a fire hazard. Pls ask our fire dept and they will agree with me
Thirty Four November 05, 2012 at 02:55 AM
Got your point, but according to Consumer Report (http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/space-heaters/buying-guide.htm), they just recommend that if we have to use it with an extension cord, we should use with 12-or 14-gauge model. I think most extension cord is 16-gauge which is definitely undersized which couldn't handle typical 1500W heater. Also the longer the cord, the higher risk (i.e. anything longer than 25 feet would need to compensate with higher rated cord). They don't say NEVER. Just make sure the extension code is not overloaded, undersized, or frayed. I guess you are right, people better know what they are doing. Otherwise, don't do it.
