Demolition Of Pals Cabin In Pictures

Pals Cabin, the iconic steakhouse at the corner of Eagle Rock and Prospect Avenues in West Orange, is being torn down after 81 years in business.

The restaurant that was a favorite of Babe Ruth was paying $20,000 utilities a month and nearly $200,000 in property taxes a year, the owners previously told the Star-Ledger.

Pals opened in 1932, when friends Martin L. (Marty) Horn and Bion Leroy (Roy) Sale joined forces. It started off as a modest hot dog stand, 10-by-12 feet, in the midst of the Great Depression.

Over the years, the Horn family has continued to operate the popular restaurant. The third generation of Horns, Don, Jr., Peter, Jimmy and Marty, currently own the restaurant.

Regulars need not worry, some of Pals favorites will still be available.

On July 4, the restaurant announced they had expanded their partnership with Fairchilds Market at 171 Eagle Rock Avenue in Roseland.

“A new menu featuring Pals Famous & Original foods will be available everyday at Fairchilds,” they said. “Favorites such as our Cream of Mushroom Soup, French Onion Soup, Fresh Ground Burgers, Foot-long Frankfurter, Redwood Sandwich, Turkey Gobbler Wrap, Hot Turkey and Roast Beef Sandwiches will be offered along with Fairchilds menu of gourmet salads, creative sandwiches, finely prepared foods, hard-to-find wines and unique gifts.”
