Livingston High Students Honor Veterans 'In Their Own Words' Wednesday

'These are members of our family, our friends and neighbors who witnessed key moments in this nation's history,' Livingston High history teacher Ernest Cuneo.

Livingston High School students will show film featuring and honoring local veterans tonight. 

“In Their Own Words” is a film by Livingston High School that honors the men and woman who have fought in America’s wars, will have its final showing at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Livingston Public Library. 

Students from the high school’s Armed Forces Club led by Mike Munley, a Marine Corps Iraq veteran and physical education teacher, interviewed Livingston’s veterans from WWII, Korea, a conflict in Panama, Vietnam, the first Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Livingston High history teacher Ernest Cuneo narrates the documentary. 

As a senior last year, Jesse Kirsch filmed and edited the documentary, with guidance from television production teacher Jason Daily. It was produced by Bunnie Ratner in honor of Livingston's bicentennial.

"A film like this is important because these stories, and others like them, deserve to be preserved," Cuneo said. 

"These are members of our family, our friends and neighbors who witnessed key moments in this nation's history. If we don't pay attention and save them, they could be lost ... and what a loss that would be."

The schools are involved in other Veteran’s Day observances. 

Social study classes contributed 200 letters to a community effort for Give2thetroops.org, a group that sends care packages and letters to U.S. Troops.  

Third-grader Collins writes, "Dear Soldier … Thank you for keeping us safe. Thank you for serving our country. Thank you for making the world a safer place. Thank you for protecting us. You're my hero. Thank you for risking, sacrificing you life for our freedom.”

Upcoming Concert Features Veterans 

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, a concert at Livingston High School will also salute veterans. The program, featuring the LHS chorus and marching band, will pay tribute to local veterans and their families, and patriotic music. 

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Livingston High School auditorium. It is free and open to the public. 

During the concert, a special tribute will be presented to the Brendon Devlin family of Livingston, who have had four sons serving in the U.S. Armed Forces in the Middle East over the past 12 years.
