Edison Day In West Orange

Special exhibits will open to celebrate the day

The Thomas Edison National Historic Park, 211 Main Street, is offering free admission for adults and kids on June 2, for Edison Day.

Hosted by the National Park Service and the Friends of Thomas Edison National Historical Park the day's events starts at 10 a.m. No reservations are required and will take place rain or shine.

In a rare special opportunity for guests, the Archives in Building Four will be open with some opening documents of the complex, which are over 125 years old.

A child-size replica of the Ford Model T, like Edison owned, will be on display with an opportunity for kids to get dressed up in period costumes and take a picture in the Friends booth. The car will be on display in Edison's garage at the Glenmont Estate.

Live music will play throughout the day but not just any performance. Artists will play and record into a wax cylinder phonograph just like 100 years ago, in the wax cylinder recording session.

Musicians performing include The Red Hook Ramblers, a New Orleans-style hot jazz band, coming straight out of Brooklyn; Slavic Soul Party, a New York based brass band that mixes Balkan music with American funk and jazz and Alex Greenleaf who plays "Hot Swinging Jazz from the 20's & 30's with a dash of Yiddish Soul and Jug band magic."

Viewings of historic Edison movies will play throughout the day, with a wide variety giving something for everyone to watch and find some interest in.

In addition to the Edison Day activities, all the usual park exhibits will be open. Visitors can spend time exploring the Main Laboratory Building, take a tour of the house and grounds at Glenmont and visit the garage to view Edison’s cars.

Great timing it seems. I just saw the new town website with the new tagline, "where invention lives" and now there's a free-day to go see where invention was born. There's an awful lot to do around here this weekend. This today, the strawberry festival I think at the school and the Men Who Can Cook tomorrow. Way to go this weekend!
