Livingston Public Library receives grant in time for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the Livingston Public Library has obtained a new collection of books and other materials on cancer prevention and treatment, especially breast cancer, ovarian cancer and other cancers. The Library recently received a $750.00 grant from the New Jersey State Library. The State Library administered an overall grant to public libraries in New Jersey with funds from a Bristol-Myers-Squibb Company anti-trust settlement.

Reference Librarian Archana Chiplunkar researched and selected sixteen items, fourteen new books and two DVDs, for the grant. Several are in the Reference collection for use in the Library; the rest may be borrowed.

In addition to these items, the Library provides access to online databases that provide more comprehensive and up-to-the- minute information; all of the databases can be searched from home. Health Source: Consumer Edition is the richest collection of consumer health information available to libraries worldwide. Medline Plus is a website for patients and their families and friends. It is sponsored by produced by the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. Both of these are sponsored by the New Jersey State Library and can be found at jerseyclicks.org.
