The Exit 5 Robotics Team Qualifies for the FLL North American Championships

For the second year in a row, the Exit 5 Robotics Team from Livingston Robotics Club qualified for one of the three FLL (First Lego League) international tournaments.  By finishing with a 2nd Place Champion's Award, the team was invited to compete against 71 other teams at the 2013 FLL North American Open Championship (NAOC).  They are honored to be among the few teams, out of approximately 21,000 worldwide, rewarded with a seat at one three international finals tournaments.

To get there, their journey involved beating out 21 other teams at the November 2012 Hillsborough Regional Qualifying Tournament, winning 1st Place Champion's Award as well as a 2nd place robotics performance.   At the next stop, the December 2012 NJ State Finals with a field of 48 teams, Exit 5 Robotics finished ahead of 46 other teams and just a mere smidge behind the 1st place team.

Although it's a tough feat to repeat, this essentially replicates their success at the same point 12 months ago.  In 2011, the team won regional Champions Award at Liberty Science Center.  At the subsequent NJ State Finals, they won the 2nd Place Champions Award.  They were one of 64 top teams out of over 20,000 worldwide, to qualify and compete in the 2012 World Invitational Open in Florida.

The annual FLL competition involves three areas of competition: core values, research project, and robotics.  This year's theme is focused on improving the lives of our senior population.  To prepare for the North American Open Championship the team is hard at work researching solutions to keep our senior partners engaged, connected, and independent.  Also during this period the team is staying active in their core values efforts.  And... of course the team is inventively investigating improvements to their robot.
