Gov. Christie Wants Non-Partisan Effort to Approve Tax Cuts

Christie also addresses video parody with Newark mayor during his East Hanover meeting.

The focus Wednesday of Gov. Chris Christie's 79th Town Hall meeting was the governor's proposed 10 percent, across-the-board tax cuts. Christie, speaking at the East Hanover Fire Department, said he's determined to deliver the tax break New Jersey residents have been waiting for. “The people of New Jersey haven’t had a tax cut in over a decade," he said. "You’ve made the sacrifices that were necessary to step up and help me balance this budget, and I want to give you some of your money back to spend on your family, not to spend in Trenton." Christie looks to accomplish this despite some opposition across county lines. According to Christie, two of those opposing the proposal in particular—Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald (D-Camden) …

County Unveils New Senior Bus Fleet

Nineteen buses added to county's Special Transportation System to aid seniors and disabled.

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. announced the addition of 19 new buses for the county’s Special Transportation System while unveiling the new arrivals at the Essex County Division of Senior Services in Verona Wednesday. Coinciding with May’s designation as Older Americans Month, buses will be added to the fleet run under the county’s Division of Senior Services, which provides free transportation to the county’s senior citizens and disabled residents. Ten buses arrived this month with an additional nine to be delivered in June. With the new buses, four of which were awarded to the county through a grant from the Federal Transit Administration, the county’s fleet will now number 46. Several of the buses were used to replace …

Booker, Christie Ham It Up for Video

Mayor and governor have fun with their images

Just because they're the state's two most prominent politicians doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humor. The office of Gov. Chris Christie yesterday released a lighthearted video co-starring Newark Mayor Cory Booker as a peripatetic go-to guy, riffing off his now national-scale image as a man of action following his rescue of a neighbor from a burning building several weeks ago. As the Democratic mayor of the state's largest city is depicted doing everything from coming up with a spare guitar for Bruce Springsteen to catching a falling baby, a faux-frustrated Christie hisses "Booker!" The video was produced for the New Jersey Press Association's Legislative Correspondent's Club show. Click on the video above to see the Cory and Chris…

POLL: Did Obama Do the Right Thing by Supporting Gay Marriage?

President Barack Obama made big headlines with his announcement this week.

President Barack Obama made national headlines this week when he came out in support of gay marriage during an interview on ABC News. Obama said he has changed his stance on the issue and said, for him, personally, "I think same-sex couples should be able to get married." Reporters at ABC called the statement historical. Obama's remarks came just after North Carolina formally banned gay marriage. Some critics have said the president may have come out for gay marriage for politcal reasons, in anticipation of the upcoming presidential election, but others say his sentiments are sincere. Was it appropriate for President Obama to stand up in support of gay marriage? What do you think?

Obama Endorses Same-Sex Marriage: NJ Advocates Rejoice

President made his historic pronouncement during an interview with ABC News.

President Barack Obama has publically come out in support of same sex marriage, the first time in history that a sitting U.S. president has ever done so.  Obama gave the news to ABC News' Robin Roberts in an interview that will air on ABCs “Good Morning America" on Thursday. "I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or Marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to …

NJ Spotlight’s Interactive Map: High School Graduation Testing

Statewide, 82.2 percent of NJ graduates are passing the High School Proficiency Assessment

As Gov. Chris Christie proposed changing the tests New Jersey students need to pass in order to graduate, the state Department of Education released data showing just 8 of 10 graduating seniors are passing the current test. (Editor’s Note: Those numbers are higher in districts like Livingston and Millburn, which scored 98.2 percent and 97.4 percent respectively.) Christie on Monday unveiled a plan to replace the High School Proficiency Assessment with end-of-course exams in language arts and math. The HSPA only measures skills at an 8th grade level, the governor said. The state may also recommend science and social studies tests.  The next day, the DOE released data showing the percentage of 2011 graduates in each district who passed the …

Christie Writes Excuse Note For 11-Year-Old (Video)

Eleven-year-old Peter Schwartz came to hear the Republican Governor speak and needed a note out of class.

At a town hall meeting in Garfield on Wednesday, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie provided some light humor for the crowd.   Eleven-year-old Peter Schwartz skipped school to come hear the governor speak. When given the opportunity to speak to Christie from the crowd, the boy needed a favor from the governor. "I kind of need a note for school," Schwartz said to Christie. Christie happily obliged and wrote a note for the boy to bring to his teacher stating: "Please excuse Peter from school today, he was with me." Prior to Schwartz asking for a note, he asked a very serious question about what to do if a student is being bullied by someone in authority. Christie told the boy to talk to his parents and together, the family should go see the …
