October will be another busy month for the seniors in Livingston. Here are 10 Things happening next week: 1. Staring Monday, Oct. 3, Old Guard members meet to discuss computer-related subjects. Stu Spater and George Gerges lead the group. 2. Tuesday is the regular Old Guard meeting but this Tuesday is special. The Old Guard is celebrating Columbus Day with Dr. Frank De Gregario who speak about “Italian Heritage & America.” The public is invited to hear Dr. DeGregorio and should arrive at the Senior/Community Center by 10:30 a.m. Following the hour-long program, Old Guard members will be …
Dr. Daniel Lee spoke at the Old Guard meeting this week at the Senior/Community Center. There were 65 members present plus the general public to hear Dr. Lee’s presentation regarding high blood pressure or hypertension [see video]. Dr. Lee explained how this condition is extremely prevalent among senior citizens and must be closely monitored. Part of his presentation entailed demonstrating the proper method for self monitoring at home. The Senior/Community Center was packed on Wednesday with seniors getting the flu shot. The Livingston Senior/Community Center was the place to be this past week for old timers and newcomers alike. On Thursday, grandkids were treated to an afternoon outing with their grandparents. The children were treated to face painting, kite making with colorful decorations, refreshments and entertainment. They enjoyed plenty of pizza, desserts and soda. With the Livingtones singing appropriately enough “You Are My Sunshine,” senior citizens spent a rainy day bidding farewell to summer at their ice cream social. Sonny Peters, choral director for the AARP singing group, played the piano as the choir led a sing-a-long of familiar favorites. There was also dancing, and jokes, and of course, dessert. The township sponsored the “end of summer” celebration. Nick Pulitano, Livingston AARP president, announced two upcoming day trips and reported on another very successful AARP-sponsored five-day trip to Cape Cod.  In the past, the AARP five-day trips have included a cruise from New York to Nova Scotia and another to a Dude Ranch. The next trip being planned is to another dude ranch and according to Lucia Ilaria, who is a member of the Chapters Board of directors and trip director, “all trips are reasonably priced." More than 150 Livingston seniors gathered at Northland Pool on Wednesday night. This was the second time this summer that the town offered the opportunity to its senior population. Jennifer Hessberger, director of SYLS was on hand to greet the seniors, assisted by Nancy Verniero and a host of volunteers. Mayor Rudy Fernandez and Deputy Mayor Steve Santola were helping out, including going for more milk for the coffee. They couldn’t be encouraged to say a few words, which most politicians would never refuse. They said this was a night for seniors to enjoy music and each others company. It was …
Mel and Estelle Sher have been married 61 years and enjoy all of their volunteer activities. All is an understatement! For the past 17 years they’ve been involved with the Saint Barnabas volunteer program, the town’s meal on wheels program and senior transportation, the Special Olympics, AARP, VFW, Jewish War Veterans, American Legion, Livingston Old Guard, and the Knights of Pythias. Mel has been editor for these organization’s newsletters and has received first-place national recognition on several occasions. The Senior Advisory committee held a regularly scheduled meeting last week and not only was the temperature hot but the members discussed some hot topics with the town manager, Michele Meade and senior program supervisor, Liliana Branquinho.  The members attending this meeting are appointed at the beginning of each year by the council members as part of the annual reorganization process. The members attend regularly scheduled meetings and attempt to assist program development and provide on going attention to senior-related activities.  The highlight of this meeting was that the bus used for …
This week, Livingston seniors traveled to Newark, led by senorita Liliana Branquinho, Livingston’s program supervisor for seniors. On Tuesday, July 26, the seniors met at the town’s Senior/Community Center and were briefed by Lilianna as to what to expect on this cultural program she had planned for the day. Lilianna talked about the history of Portugal and showed a map displaying the five regions of the country. She was born and raised in the country’s capital, Lisbon, and came to America when she was a teenager. She had made arrangements for the group to have a typical Portuguese meal at a …
The AARP  singing group held an organizational meeting on Monday, July 18 at the Senior/Community Center. Lilianna  Branquinho, program supervisor for seniors, was present and offered her support to the group. Lilianna stated that it was great that the AARP was forming a singing group and she was looking forward to seeing them perform at local nursing homes and VA hospitals. She’s hoping that more people will become active and she made promotional flyers for posting throughout the community. When it rains, it pours. But about 150 senior citizens didn’t let a passing storm change their plans for a Senior Pool Party at Northland Pool on Wednesday, July 13. The party was sponsored by the Senior, Youth and Leisure Services [SLYS], set to begin at 8 p.m. At 7, it began to rain, but thankfully stopped just 15 minutes later. Lilanna Branquiho, program supervisor for Seniors & Adult Enrichment & Special Events, and her volunteers began to set up the tables and chairs.
