Growing up as an American of Irish descent, several elements stand out from my childhood: A life centered around the parish — parochial school, Sunday Mass, May processions, stations of the cross. A love of talk — talk of politics, literature, philosophy, more politics, movies, religion and — did I mention? — politics.
