Photos: Livingston Struck by Irene’s Wicked Winds
The sun, our cameras and mops come out as we assess the storm’s damage.
These photos sent to Patch show the destructive path of Irene, a one-time hurricane who came through Livingston as a tropical storm. The cleanup began soon after the rains stopped. Everywhere you looked were people filling garbage bags with soaked remnants of their lives.
“I think we were actually pretty lucky,” said Detective Sgt. Anthony Dippold. “The winds weren’t as strong as predicted. If they were any greater, we would have had even more problems.”
As it was, Livingston hardly got off without a scratch. About 40 trees fell, several striking homes. Many homes and streets are flooded. And pockets of power outages remain, at last count close to 900 JCP&L customers Livingston. The fire department has gotten dozens of calls from residents with flooded basements.
Mayor Rudy Fernandez took a drive around town on Sunday. “There is localized street and basement flooding and the public works garage experienced significant flooding, almost 3 feet, but most importantly no injuries to residents, volunteers or employees,” he said.
Boris and Jane Kizhner of Heron Road were among those cleaning up the flooding Irene ravaged on Livingston. They had placed belongings on high shelves but didn't count on 5 feet of water in their basement.
"I don't know how long it's going to take to clean up," Jane Kizhner said. " We've got a newborn, too, so it's going to take a while. Who do we call? What do we do? We've never dealt with a situation like this before."
