Livingston Car Theft Goes Awry

An early Thursday car theft did not go as planned for one unlucky thief.

A chaotic scene ensued on Thursday morning as a car thief tried stealing a silver Porsche that was left running outside of . 

A Livingston resident left his car running as he went in for his morning nourishment.  Once the resident went inside, a suspected car thief immediately entered the Porsche and attempted to take it. 

Luckily for the resident, a good Samaritan in a car next to the Porsche blocked the vehicle snatcher from leaving by pulling his car behind the Porsche.

However, the thief was not alone that morning as he had an accomplice in a BMW waiting in the parking lot.  Once the accomplice saw that the perpetrator was in trouble, he drove his car over to the blocking vehicle and started to drive into it, attempting to push it out of the way.

As the accomplice was trying in vain to free the stolen Porsche, the thief behind the wheel had enough with waiting and tried to jump the curb to escape with his prize.  However, as he jumped the curb, he severed a fuel line, splattering fuel everywhere.

The Porsche made it onto South Livingston Avenue before running out of fuel and coming to a stop.  The thief quickly jumped out of the unmoving vehicle and into his buddy's BMW and the two sped away.

The , as well as the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, responded to the scene and the Porsche was towed to the Essex County Crime Scene Unit so that it could undergo forensic testing.

The LPD is looking for help identifying the suspected car thieves and ask any residents with information to call the Livingston police at (973) 992-3000 and ask for the detective bureau. All tips will be kept confidential.
