Alexander Nie and Justine Jang rank among the top twenty students in the nation in the USA Chemistry Olympiad

After several rounds of exams, students Alexander Nie and Justine Jang rank among the top twenty students in the nation in the USA Chemistry Olympiad.  Alexander and Justine qualified for the opportunity to compete for one of four places on the United States team.  They have been invited to a two-week intensive study camp at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado to prepare for qualification for the U.S team that will compete in the International Chemistry Olympiad.

“We are very proud of Alex and Justine for their outstanding accomplishments.  They have both worked extremely hard to find this level of success and it speaks to the passion and drive they possess,” said Brian Carey, 9-12 Science Chairperson.  “Congratulations also go out to Theresa Loboda and Susan Spadafina for their work in preparing Alex and Justine for the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad,” continued Carey, “it is truly remarkable that two of the top twenty chemistry students in the nation come from Livingston High School.”

The International Chemistry Olympiad, which began in 1968 with participants from Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Hungary, is an annual competition for the world’s most talented chemistry students at the secondary school level. Nations around the world send a team of four students to test their chemistry knowledge and skills in a five-hour lab practical and five-hour written examination.  The United States hosted the event in 1992 and will once again host the 2012 event – the 44th Annual International Chemistry Olympiad – at the University of Maryland, College Park.
