Collins Has Culture

School event allows students to learn about 14 fascinating countries from around the world.

Who: Collins Elementary School.

Accomplishments: They got culture!

Key to Awesomeness: Fourteen countries came together in a vibrant festival of music, crafts, and food as Collins’ Elementary recently held its Multicultural Fair. Performances included The Lion Dance and Lantern Dance from Taiwan, an Indian Group Dance, Chinese Folk Song Ensemble, Irish Step Dance, a Peruvian Dance (The Marinera) and a dance from the Philippines (the Tinikling Bamboo Dance).  There was also an International Fashion Show which included costumes from Korea, Peru, India, Taiwan, and China.

Attendees feasted on a dazzling array of food including such exotic dishes as papad (Indian flatbread), chica morada and ocopa (Peru), and milanesa (Uruguay) as well as more familiar fare including scones, shrimp chips, dumplings, Irish soda bread, biscotti, quiche, and Italian knot cookies.  Other activities included making Worry Dolls, tracing Hebrew script, learning how to do Origami, learning about Mehndi (henna skin decoration), or seeing a display of tae kwon do.

Collins Principal John Leister summed up the event by saying, “Through the Multicultural Fair, we demonstrate for children how important it is to celebrate our diversity. I am so grateful to the families and staff members who led the event tonight. It could not have been better!”
