Herbert H. Sher of Livingston died on May 12 at home. He was 74. Born in Newark, Sher settled in Livingston in 1973. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from New York University. He worked for several years as an engineer and plant manager before joining Touche Ross & Co. in 1971 as a management consultant and leaving as a partner in 1983. He then purchased a manufacturing business, which he managed until retiring in 1996. Sher was active with the United Way of North Essex, both on the board and as treasurer for four years, and with Temple Emanu-El of West Essex, serving on many committees, on the board and as vice-president.
